Word count and reading time explained

Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs, with an estimated reading time and the most frequent words.

How it works

Words split on Unicode whitespace, characters are code points, sentences end at punctuation followed by space or end of text, and reading time divides words by 200 per minute. Frequent words are counted after lowercasing.

  • Word splitting follows Unicode whitespace; reading time assumes 200 words per minute.

Why it matters

Length limits affect SEO snippets, ad copy, essays and translations. Knowing the count before pasting avoids truncation, and the reading-time estimate is useful when deciding how long a section should be.

A worked example

A 400-word article at 200 words per minute is about two minutes of reading. Hyphenated compounds count as one word because the counter splits on whitespace, while CJK text behaves differently.

Common mistakes

  • Treating words per minute as universal across languages.
  • Forgetting that markdown syntax counts as text.
  • Assuming a CMS limit counts the same way as a word processor.

Practical tips

For scientific writing, remember that a hyphenated compound is often counted as one word by journals and two by some tools. Draft to a target, then check the final count in the system that will enforce the limit.

Common questions

How is reading time estimated?

At 200 words per minute, rounded to whole minutes. It is an estimate for average reading speed.

How are hyphenated words counted?

Words are split on whitespace, so hyphenated compounds count as one word unless spaces separate them.

Does it count characters too?

Yes. Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time are shown together.

Is this tool really free?

Yes. There is no account, no paywall and no usage limit. Tools App is funded by aumenso, the studio behind it.

Is anything I enter uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser tab; what you enter is never sent to us and never stored.
